Paine Splits With Claflin

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Paine College softball team split a pair of games at Claflin, winning 7-0 before falling 5-3 in the nightcap.

The Lady Lions are now 5-9 on the season.

In game one, Nakeira Mallory walked with one down and move to third on a single by Alexis Mena. Kayla Carter's base hit up the middle pushed across Mallory for a 1-0 edge.

The score remained the same until the third. Ana Cobas singled and swiped second. With two down, Carter singled to left field and Cobas scored on an error. Moments later, Emmy Segura singled home Allana Adams and Sellam drove in Leidy Garcia for a 5-0 advantage.

In the fifth, PC take on a run when Garcia scored on an error. Segura swiped a base and scored on an error for the seven-run cushion.

For the game, Carter and Sellam led the way with three hits apiece. Cobas, Mena and Segura had two hits each. Garcia crossed home twice.

Carter tossed a complete game, striking out five to get the win.

PC took a 3-0 lead in game two through its first two at bats. Cobas walked and Z'Liyah Harris singled. A base hit by Mallory knocked in Cobas with a single while Segura capped the two-run frame with a base hit that scored Harris.

With two down in the second, Sellam and Cobas singled. A base hit by Harris loaded the bases for Mallory, who ripped a base hit into center field for a 3-0 edge.

Claflin tied the game in the bottom of the second before pushing across a run in the fourth and fifth stanzas for the 5-3 final.

For the game, Harris and Mallory had two hits apiece. Mallory drove in two.

In the circle, Difany De La Rosa got the start while Carter worked the final four innings and had three strikeouts.    

The Lady Lions return to action Wednesday when they host Savannah State for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
