COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Paine College softball team picked up a sweep at Benedict, winning by scores of 15-1 and 6-5.
The Lady Lions are now 8-16 on the season.
PC jumped on top with five runs in the fifth before adding six in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth for the run-rule victory.
PC got on the board when
Allana Adams doubled in
Marina Hinojosa Jr. Moments later,
Ana Cobas singled in Adams. Up 2-0,
Dara Ayovi Sr. ripped a double to left center field for a 3-0 lead.
Lena Sellam plated Ayovi with a base knock before
Nakeira Mallory singled in Sellam for the 5-0 edge.
After
Z'Liyah Harris and Hinojosa scored on an error, Ayovi doubled in two more for a 9-0 lead. Ayovi scored on a fielder's choice before
Emmy Segura singled in Mallory for a double-digit advantage, 11-0.
Sellam singled in Ayovi for a 12-0 margin in the fourth. PC tacked on three more runs in the fifth for the 15-1 win.
For the game, Ayovi Sr. led the way with three hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Adams also crossed home three times.
Kayla Carter got the win. She went the distance and had five strikeouts.
PC plated three runs in the second to get things started in game two. Adams scored on a single by A. Mena, who then scored on a double by Hinojosa. A Cobas double plated Hinojosa for the 3-0 lead.
Tied at 3-3 in the third, Hinojosa knocked in Harris. A bases loaded walk to Cobas pushed the margin to 5-3.
With the score at 5-4, the teams traded runs in the sixth with Mallory driving in Sellam.
Carter went the distance for the win, striking out three.
Hinojosa led the way with three hits and two RBI. Cobas also drove in two while Adams scored twice.
The Lady Lions return to action Sunday, Apr. 13, when they play a doubleheader at Wesleyan starting at 1 p.m.
