AUGUSTA, Ga. (Women's basketball) – The Paine College women's basketball team scored a resounding victory of Homecoming opponent, Allen University on Saturday, 96-61.
The Lady Lions were able to start scoring in the first half and keep it up throughout the entire game. In the first half of play, Allen scored the first basket with 19:46 left in the first half. Latoya Allen made a three point shot, 3-0.
Jemetria Fletcher answered back for Paine with a jumper at the 19:16 left in the first half, 3-2. The Lady Yellowjackets tried to mount a comeback with 18:16 left in the first half, S'Nitra Mack made both of her free throws after being fouled by
Brianna Sims, 5-4. Sims retaliated for the Lady Lions with a three-point basket from the corner with 18:08 left in the first half. Jones tied the score again for Allen with a layup at the 17:26 mark in the first half.
Paine would take the lead and kept it at the 17:05 mark in the first when
Lasharon Salahuddin split her free throws after being fouled by Michelle Floyd, 8-7. The Lady Lions went into the locker room at halftime leading Allen by 16 points.
Salahuddin started the scoring barrage in the second half when she made a fast break layup with 19:54 left in the half, 50-34. The Lady Yellowjackets attempted to mount a comeback when Dekoya Mack scoring a three point basket with 17:51 left in the second half.
Janisha Wilkerson quickly put down the Allen attack when she made back-to-back layups at the 17:30 and 17:12 marks in the second half, 58-37. Allen never recovered in the half. The Lady Lions led by as many as 40 points with 1:42 left in the second half.
Fletcher led Paine with 14 points. Burns followed her with 13 points. Delisia Sharpe made her presence in the middle known with 11 rebounds and two blocks. Sims and
Lashonda Canty followed her with nine rebounds. Sims was also the team leader in assists with seven. Salahuddin had the fastest hands as she produced six steals.
As a team, Paine finished the night with 62 rebounds, 21 assists, 14 steals, and four blocks. The Lady Lions were 46.5 percent from the field, 25 percent from the arc, and 66.7 percent from the free throw line.
Dekoya Mack led Allen with 15 points, four steals and four assists. S'Nitra Mack followed her with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Kamya Thomas also recorded a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Collectively, the Lady Yellowjackets finished the game with 47 rebounds, 12 assists, eight steals and two blocks. The team was 24.4 percent from the field, 35 percent from the arc, and 60.9 percent from the free throw line.
With the win, Paine moves to 10-14, overall and Allen drops to 5-23.
The Lady Lions return to action on Monday at 5:30 p.m. as the team travels to Claflin University.
