AUGUSTA, Ga. (Baseball) – On Wednesday afternoon, the Paine College baseball team dropped a heartbreaker game to Georgia Regents University-Augusta, 11-2. With the loss, the Lions drop to 13-16 overall. GRU moves to 9-16 for the season.
The Jaguars struck early in the first inning when C.J. Reed grounded out to second base and allowed Drew Taylor to score, 1-0. The next two runs for GRU-Augusta came in when Clint Hardy hit a home run to drive in Hunter Boose as well, 3-0. Boose reached first base after an error.
Paine scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Jaron Johnson singled to drive in
Kendrick Elder and
Fentress Henderson, 3-2. Elder singled to get on base while Henderson was hit by pitch to reach first.
GRU-Augusta blew the game open in the seventh inning when the team scored five runs. Nick Rau doubled to score Hardy and Jim Wagner, 5-2. Hardy reached base on a walk and Hardy tripled. Taylor hit the first home run of the game to drive in Rau, 7-2. Wagner helped score another run when he was walked with the bases loaded, 8-2.
The last runs of the game were scored when Hardy scored the second home run to drive in Boose and Tyler Roberts for three more runs, 11-2. Boose reached on a single and Roberts reached on a walk.
Darrell Render picks up the loss for the Lions as he pitched three innings for three runs, three hits, three earned runs, three strikeouts, and one wild pitch.
Kevin Dodson gets the win for the Jaguars with four innings pitched for two runs, two hits, and two earned runs.
The Lions will face Benedict College in a three game series at home, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 27 at noon. The single game will be played on Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m.
