Paine Cross Country Participates in USC-Upstate Meet

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Men's and Women's Cross Country) – The Paine College men's and women's cross country team headed to Spartanburg, S.C. to compete in the University of South Carolina-Upstate Eye Opener meet on Friday, Sept. 4.

The Lions competed against schools such as Converse College, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Young Harris College, University of North Carolina-Pembroke, Brevard College, Lenoire - Rhyne College, Wofford College and Spartanburg Methodist College.

For the women, Ashly Sutherland of Converse won the 5k meet with a time of 19:12.16. She was followed in second and third place by Caroline Cook from SCAD – Savannah with a time of 19:14.06 and Nancy Murgor of Young Harris College with a time of 19:15.77. The top runner for the Paine women was senior Diamond Walker with a time of 24:20.90.

On the men's side of things, Griffin Eubanks from USC-Upstate came in first place for the men's 8k run with a time of 26:15.51. He was followed in second and third place by Tim Sigmon of UNC-Pembroke with a time of 26:22.71 and Mathew Biwott of Young Harris College with a time of 26:25.57. The top runner for the Lion men was Markendy Pierre with a time of 34:08.96.

The Paine men's and women's cross country teams will return to action on Sept. 12 as they travel Greenville, S.C. to compete in the Furman University Classic.
