Lions Sweep Maroon Tigers, 3-0, to Open Conference Play

AUGUSTA, Ga. (Baseball) – The Paine College Lions (12-9, 3-0 SIAC) faced off against Morehouse College (12-8, 0-3 SIAC) in a weekend series that started on Saturday afternoon at Lions Field. Paine was able to pick up the all three games to start conference play off with 3-0 record and extend their current season record to 12-9.

In game one, the Lions started out sluggish but bounced back in the bottom of the fourth inning and seven runs, 7-1. Fentress Henderson won the game when he hit a single to drive in Jalen Horton.

Evan Krenz shined again for Paine as he picked up the win with a complete seven-inning game. He finished with 10 strikeouts, four hits, two walks, one earned run, and faced 26 batters.

For the Maroon Tigers, Daron Bowling got the loss with six innings pitched for 10 hits, seven runs, four walks, and five strikeouts.

Morehouse jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Lions quickly answered back. Paine started a scoring barrage that led to four runs in the bottom of the second inning, one in the third and fourth innings, two runs in the fifth inning, and one in the sixth inning. The Maroon Tigers scored their last run in the top of the sixth inning when Patrick Dickerson was able to score on an error, 9-3.

Juan Berger snapped up the win for Paine with a complete seven-inning game pitched for eight strikeouts, two earned runs, seven walks, and faced 31 batters.

The losing pitcher was Kristopher Skinner, who pitched six innings for eight hits, nine runs, two walks and five strikeouts.

In the final game, the Lions came out blazing with two runs in the bottom of the bottom of the first inning. Henderson hit a triple and drove in Kendrick Elder, 1-0. Then, he was able to cruise to home plate on a passed ball, 2-0. Morehouse struck back with four runs in the top of the second inning and one in the top of the third, 5-2. Paine tied the game up in the bottom of the third with three runs. The Maroon Tigers were able to pick up a run in the top of the fifth inning when Derrick Lewis singled to drive in Javon Phillips, 6-5. Not to be outdone, the Lions five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-6 lead. Morehouse began to rally scoring two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to knot the game back up at 10.  Paine's Ricky Carvajal sealed the game when he singled to drive in Adam Martin in the bottom of the eighth inning, 11-10.

Zach Rader picked up the win on the mound for the Lions with 2.2 innings pitched. He finished the game with no hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts.

Anthony Dodd was the losing pitcher for the Maroon Tigers with four innings pitched for two hits, one run, two walks and one strikeout.

The Lions will return to action on Tuesday as they head to the Sumpter, S.C. to face Voorhees College in a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m. for a non-conference match up.
