JASPER, Ala. (Softball) – The Paine College softball team traveled to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Softball Crossover in Jasper, Ala. to face teams from the Western Division of the conference. Paine went 0-2 to open the tournament against LeMoyne-Owen College Lady Magicians and Tuskegee University Lady Golden Tigers.
In game one, the Lady Magicians struck first with a Tierra Williams driving in Monique Tharpe with a single, 1-0. Tharpe singled to reach first, stole second and advance to third on a throwing error.
Paine started out hot by jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Maya Field doubled to score Rickary Holloman and
De'Jour Davis. Holloman walked to reach first base and stole second base. Davis singled to left field to reach first base, 2-1. Field stole home, 3-1. She doubled to reach second base and advanced third on a passed ball.
Shawna Wilson stole home, 4-1. Wilson walked to reach first base, stole second, and advanced to third when
Lasharon Salahuddin hit a single.
LeMoyne-Owen began to rally in the top of the fourth inning scoring two runs. Quena Johnson singled to centerfield to score Williams and LaNisha Perry, 4-3. Williams singled to reach first base, and advanced to second on a walk. Perry singled to reach first base, advanced to second on Williams single, and went to third on a walk.
The Lady Lions answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Holloman scored when
De'Jour Davis hit a single, 5-3. Holloman reached first on e fielding error, and stole second. Davis came home when Salahuddin made it first base on a fielder's choice, 6-3. She singled to reach first base, advanced to second on a throwing error, and reached third base when
Destiny Conyers bunted.
The Lady Magicians would start another rally and Paine could not keep up. LeMoyne-Owen scored one run in the fifth inning and three in sixth inning. LOC claimed the game with a score 7-6.
Davis suffered the loss for Paine with a complete game for nine hits, seven runs, three walks, nine strikeouts, and 35 batters faced.
LaRaya Fisher picked up the win with six innings pitched for seven hits, two runs, five walks and eleven strikeouts.
Against Tuskegee University, the Lady Lions were defeated 16-0 in five innings. The Lady Golden Tigers scored nine runs in the first inning, four runs in the second inning, and three runs in the fourth inning.
Jasmine Hinds took the loss for Paine with four inning pitched for 13 hits, 16 runs, four walks and 34 batters faced.
Acey Spence got the win on the mound for Tuskegee with three inning pitched for no hits, no runs, no walks, one strikeout, and nine batters faced.
The Lady Lions will continue play in the crossover on Friday as they face Lane College at 12 p.m. (CST), Spring Hill College at 4 p.m. (CST), and Stillman College at 6 p.m. (CST).
