AUGUSTA, Ga. (Baseball) – The Paine College Lions faced off against Clark Atlanta University Panthers in a weekend series that started on Friday afternoon at Lions Field. Paine was able to win both games of the double header with scores of 4-2 and 4-1.
In game one, the Lions were able to get on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when
Adam Martin singled through the left side and scored
Kendrick Elder, 1-0. Elder reached first base after he was hit by a pitch and stole second base.
Clark Atlanta picked up one run in the top of the second and fourth innings when Paine committed errors.
The Lions answered back with three runs in bottom of the fifth inning.
Jalen Horton singled through the left side to drive in
Jordan Deadwyler, 2-2. Deadwyler singled to reach first base and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Horton was able come home on a passed ball, 3-2. He singled to reach first place and advanced to second and third on a throwing error. Martin sealed the game when he doubled down the left field line to score Elder, 4-2. Elder reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Evan Krenz picked up the win for the Lions with a complete game. He finished the game with four hits, two runs, one walk and four strikeouts.
Jezreel Moore took the loss on the mound for the Panthers. He finished the game with seven hits, four runs, no walks and nine strikeouts.
Paine won game two as they were able to capitalize on Clark Atlanta's mistakes. The Lions struck in the bottom of the first inning with a run when
Fentress Henderson singled to third base to drive in Elder, 1-0. Elder singled to reach first base and stole second and third base. Paine picked up another three runs in the bottom of the third inning when Henderson homered inside the park to drive in Elder and Horton, 4-0. Horton walked reach first and moved to third base when Elder doubled to right field.
The Panthers scored their only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning when Ayrton Gjisbertha walked with the bases loaded and Joseph Holmes, III came home, 4-1. Holmes doubled to reach second base and moved to third base on an error.
Juan Berger got the win on the mound for Paine with a complete game pitched. He finished the game with four hits, one run, five walks and seven strikeouts.
Jordan Johnson picked up the loss for Clark Atlanta as he finished the game with five hits, four runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
