AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College women's basketball team lost a 67-53 decision to Claflin Tuesday evening.
The Lady Lions are now 0-4 on the year while Claflin improves to 4-0.
Head coach
Kisha Lucette's team was led by
Jada Brooks' team-high 19 points. She also garnered seven rebounds.
Alexandria Caples totaled 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Neani Stewart chipped in eight points and three steals while
Adewunmi Atiba had six points and six boards.
Kyra McCrary tallied five points and a team-best nine boards.
Down 14-7 heading into the second quarter, Lucette's team took a 17-16 lead after a 10-2 spurt. Caples made a lay-up to make it 16-10.
Jada Brooks hit a free throw before McCrary found Atiba for a lay-up. Brooks drilled a free throw before Caples converted an old-fashioned three-point play for a 17-16 advantage with 5:45 to go before halftime.
Stewart found Caples for a jumper at the 3:19 mark for a 20-18 lead. The back-and-forth affair saw the home team take a 23-21 lead on a pair of free throws by Brooks before the visitors embarked on a 7-0 run to end the half up 28-23.
Claflin outscored Paine 17-9 in the third quarter and only let the home squad pull within nine once the rest of the way.
For the game, Paine hit 19-of-56 from the floor (33.9 percent). The squad had 20 points in the paint and 12 fast break points.
The Lady Lions return to action Nov. 28 when they host Johnson C. Smith at 5:30 p.m.
