RALEIGH, N.C. – The Paine College women's basketball team lost a 63-55 decision at Shaw Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Lions are now 0-9 on the year.
Head coach
Kisha Lucette's team was paced by
Neani Stewart's 17 points.
Jada Brooks added 11 markers to go along with four rebounds.
Adewunmi Atiba poured in eight points, snagged five boards and garnered two steals.
Kyra McCrary chipped in seven points and 13 rebounds while
Alexandria Caples registered three steals.
The Lady Lions trailed 16-4 after the first quarter but sliced the deficit to just seven by halftime.
In the second quarter, the visitors netted seven straight points, making it 16-11 on a jumper by Brooks. A tip-in by Atiba made it a four-point game with 3:12 to play in the half.
Trailing 34-24 in the third stanza,
Castella Sherrod started a 10-0 spurt with an inside bucket.
Carlysha Golatt made it 34-28 before Caples hit another shot from distance with 4:39 on the clock. Golatt's three-ball knotted the score at 34-34 but the home team managed to hold a 44-38 lead heading into the fourth frame.
Lucette's team pulled within one with 8:31 to play on McCrary's three-ball, but the team could get no closer the rest of the way.
For the game, Paine College hit 18-of-6- from the floor, including seven=of-18 from downtown. The squad registered 50 rebounds, including 15 on the offensive glass.
The Lady Lions return to action Monday, Jan. 9 when they host Benedict at 5:30 p.m.
