JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Paine College softball team lost the season-opening doubleheader at Trinity Baptist Friday afternoon by scores of 7-1 and 4-2.
In the opener,
Emmy Segura,
Leidy Garcia,
Jakiyra Lemmon and
Brionna King each registered hits. Garcia's base knock was a double.
Trailing 2-0 in the second, Garcia reached on an error and swiped second base. With one down, she raced 60 feet for third. After a walk to King, Garcia scored on an error. It marked the tam's lone run of the contest.
Down 4-1 in the fifth, the Lady Lions threatened with King on second base after a single and an error. She moved to third but back-to-back outs ended the stanza.
Leticia Omori was hit by a pitch and moved to third on Garcia's double in the sixth, but the dyad was left stranded.
Destiny Lawrence went the distance in the game. She struck out five.
In the nightcap, Garcia doubled home Omori in the first frame for a 1-0 edge. The score remained the same until TBC tied it in the fourth and plated three runs in the fifth. However, the Lady Lions sliced the deficit to two, 4-2, with a run in the sixth.
Kamari Blackmon singled to lead off the frame and moved to second on a groundout. After hustling to third,
Katherin Sugilio's groundout allowed Blackmon to score. However, the next four batters were unable to reach base, ending the contest.
For the game, Garcia had two hits, including a double. Blackmon and Lawrence each had a hit. Sugilio drove in a run while Omori and Blackmon each crossed home plate.
In the circle,
Montana Cagle threw a complete game and had one strikeout.
The Lady Lions return to action tomorrow at Edward Waters for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
