Lady Lions Fall To Bruins

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Paine College women's basketball team lost a 69-66 decision at Carolina University Thursday evening.

Head coach Kisha Lucette's team was led by Kyra McCrary's 17-point, six-rebound performance. She was one of four Lady Lions in double figures.

Jada Brooks accounted for 16 points and five assists while Mya Beasley notched 11 points. Neani Stewart chipped in 10 points.

Ashley Rubio connected on three shots for seven points. She also snagged nine rebounds in the contest.

For the game, Paine College registered 22 points in the paint. The team forced 25 turnovers and converted them into 22 points. The squad had 16 offensive rebounds, resulting in 12 second-chance points.

Trailing by six with 4:35 to play, Lucette's team trimmed the deficit to five on a free throw from Brooks at the 3:16 mark. McCrary hit a lay-up with 2:50 to play. A second consecutive steal from Rubio resulted in a lay-up from Brooks at the 2:34 mark, making it a 65-64 game.

After a missed lay-up from Rubio, she grabbed the offensive board and converted an inside bucket to put the visitors up one, 66-65, with 1:42 to play.

Trailing 67-66, Paine missed a shot with seven seconds to play. The team was forced to foul three straight times before the Bruins went to the charity stripe. The home team made both shots for a three-point edge.

Lucette's team had a last-second shot, but the team was unable to connect.

The Lady Lions return to action Saturday when they host Virginia University of Lynchburg at 2 p.m.
