Paine Falls Twice At Fort Valley State

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Paine College softball team lost a pair of games at Fort Valley State Monday afternoon by scores of 7-6 and 10-8.

The Lady Lions are now 5-16 on the season.

Trailing 3-0 in the fifth inning, PC cut the deficit to just one. With one away, Arieyana Zachery singled down the left field line. Dara Ayovi beat out a ball to the pitcher, putting two runners on. A single by Leidy Garcia recorded a hit to load the bags. Two batters later, Katherine Sugilio doubled home Ayovi and Garcia to make it 3-2.

Down 7-2 in the seventh, the Lady Lions continued to battle. Ayovi singled to the short stop and moved to second on a throwing error. Garcia reached on an error while Ayovi scored. Omori singled home Garcia to make it 7-4. With two out and a runner on third, Segura tripled home Omori. Ka'niyah Robertson singled up the middle, plating Segura. The Lady Lions managed to load the bases before a strikeout ended the contest.

For the game, Sugilio and Ayovi each had two hits. Ayovi and Garcia each scored twice while Sugilio drove in two.

PC trailed 6-0 in the fourth inning of game two before rattling off six runs over the next two innings. In the fourth, a passed ball allowed Garcia to cross home. In the fifth, Kamari Blackmon singled to center field before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ayovi singled to right field, scoring Blackmon. Garcia drove in Ayovi on a base knock before scoring herself on a wild pitch.

A walk to Omori put her on. Sugilio tripled in Garcia and Omori while scoring on a throwing error, knotting the game at 6-6.

FVSU scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth but PC battled back with two runs in the seventh for the final 10-8 score. Omori singled home Garcia, who reached when she was hit by a pitch. Moments later, Jakiyra Lemmon lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Omori.

Garcia, Omori and Sugilio each had two hits while Sugilio drove in two. Garcia led the way with three runs scored.

The Lady Lions return to action Thursday when they play a doubleheader at Savannah State starting at 2 p.m.
