COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Paine College softball team lost both games of the doubleheader at Benedict Tuesday afternoon by scores of 12-3 and 8-6.
The Lady Lions are now 5-18 on the season.
Trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning of game one, PC jumped on top with three runs in the fourth stanza. However, Benedict rattled off six runs in the fourth and four in the fifth for the nine-run victory.
For the game,
Leticia Y. Omori posted two of the team's three hits while scoring a ru.
Faith Holston posted a hit and knocked in a run.
Jakiyra Lemmon and
Brionna King each drove in a run while
Katherine Sugilio and
Emmy Segura crossed home once.
Ka'niyah Robertson, Sugilio and Segura each swiped a base.
In the circle,
Montana Cagle worked 4.2 innings.
In game two, the Lady Lions jumped on top with two runs in the first inning. With two down, Sugilio singled to left field and moved to second on
Leidy Garcia's base hit. Lemmon knocked both runners in for the 2-0 lead.
Benedict scored eight runs over the first four innings but the Lady Lions battled back. Omori doubled to center field. Three batters later, Lemmon was hit by a pitch. Segura singled home Omori to make it 8-3.
PC cut the deficit to two in the sixth.
Kamari Blackmon led off the frame with a walk and swiped second base. After a walk to
Destiny Lawrence,
Dara Ayovi reached on an error, plating Blackmon. With runners on second and third, Sugilio singled home Lawrence. Garcia's groundout allowed Ayovi to cross home for an 8-6 count.
Lawrence, Segura and Sugilio each had two hits. Lemmon drove in two runs in the game.
Cagle went the distance in the nightcap and had a strikeout.
The Lady Lions return to action Saturday for a doubleheader at Columbia International starting at 12 p.m.
