Paine Drops Doubleheader At CIU

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Paine College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader at Columbia International Friday evening.

The Lady Lions are now 5-20 on the season.

PC fell behind 2-0 but cut the margin to one in the top of the third. However, CIU plated two runs in the third and three in the sixth for the 7-1 final.

In the top of the third, Dara Ayovi reached on an error and moved to second on a groundout. A fielding error allowed Ayovi to cross home to make the score 2-1.

Down 4-1 in the fourth, the Lady Lions put two on base. A single by Destiny Lemmon opened the frame and two batters later Blackmon singled. A base knock from Brionna King loaded the bags but a double play ended the threat.

After leaving runners on base in the fifth and sixth stanzas, PC put two on in the seventh. Montana Cagle singled to left center field. With two down, Leticia Omori hit a pitch up the middle but a pop fly ended the game.

For the game, Omori led the way with two hits and one RBI. Ayovi scored the team's lone run.

In the circle, Cagle worked 5.1 innings and had three strikeouts. Omori tossed the final two outs of the game.

The Lady Lions took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game two but CIU scored four runs in the first and second innings before tacking on a run in the third and two in the fourth for the 11-1 final.

Ayovi led off the game with an infield single and promptly stole second base. A passed ball put her on third. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Omori for the 1-0 lead.

Leidy Garcia had two of the team's three hits. Ayovi had the other hit while Omori scored a run.

In the circle, Cagle worked 1.2 frames. Omori threw the final 2.1 innings.

The Lady Lions return to action Tuesday when they host Benedict in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
