KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Paine College softball team lost two games on Tuesday at the NCCAA Softball World Series.
Playing as the No. 6 seed, the Lady Lions lost an 8-1 decision to No. 3 Southwestern Christian before falling 3-0 to No. 2 Concordia University.
PC is now 10-24 on the season.
The Lady Lions squared off against Southwest Christian to open the NCCAA Softball World Series.
PC fell behind 5-0 after the Eagles plated two runs in the first, one in the second and three runs in the third frame. The Lady Lions got on the board with a run in the fourth inning.
Katherine Sugilio led off the fourth with a bunt single. After Sugilio moved to second on a groundout,
Brionna King ripped a base hit to right center field, pulling the visitors within four at 5-1.
Trailing 7-1 in the top of the fifth, PC had a chance to cut the deficit again.
Destiny Lawrence drew a walk and moved to second on
Kamari Blackmon's sacrifice bunt.
Dara Ayovi's base hit put runners on first and third but a groundout ended the inning.
Southwest Christian added a run in the sixth for the 8-1 final.
King led the way with two hits, including a double. She drove in a run while Sugilio had a hit and crossed home plate. Ayovi also tallied a hit in the contest.
In the circle,
Montana Cagle worked four innings and had three strikeouts. Lawrence tossed the final two innings and had a strikeout.
Against Concordia University (Ann Arbor), the game was scoreless until the designated home team managed to plate two runs in the fourth inning. Concordia University (Ann Arbor) also added a run in the fifth for the 3-0 win.
Ayovi accounted for the team's lone base hit in the contest. Lawrence reached base on a walk.
In the circle, Lawrence recorded a complete game. She had three strikeouts and gave up three runs on six hits – but only two runs were earned.
The Lady Lions return to action tomorrow at 12 p.m. CST/1 p.m. EST, to face off against No. 7 Arlington Baptist in pool play. Live stats and video will be available at Paineathletics.com.
