AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College men's basketball team used a tremendous night from
Quinnton Jackson to notch an 85-69 victory over Carolina Tuesday evening.
The Lions are now 9-11 on the season.
PC was led by Jackson's game-best 29 points.
Elijah Greer-Dawson added 22 points while
Ivan Lawson notched 17 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.
The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a jumper by
Quinnton Jackson. The Bruins battled back and held 23-16 advantage prior to a pair of foul shots by
Ivan Lawson. His jumper in the paint sliced the deficit to three, 23-20, with 8:16 to play.
Down by six, 28-22, PC trimmed the deficit to four after a free throw by
Amarie Kirby and
Kole Taylor. However, a late spurt by CU made it 37-28 at the break.
The Lions roared back in the second stanza behind an outstanding press. The home team forced turnovers and converted them into easy buckets. The squad took a 47-46 lead on a jumper by Jackson.
Elijah Greer-Dawson pushed the margin to three on a lay-up off a pass from Jackson at the 12:25 mark.
Moments later, Greer-Dawson's thunderous dunk off a pass from Jackson extended the margin to six for the Lions. Jackson's floater in the lane on the break pushed the lead to nine, 58-49, with 10:13 to go.
PC led by 13 before Taylor found Jackson for a shot from distance. He rattled the shot off – and it hit every part of the rim – before falling through for a 69-53 edge. Kirby's three-ball made it a 17-point game at the 6:16 mark. The lead was never in doubt for the home team in the 16-point victory.
For the game, PC hit 32-of-67 from the floor. The team hit 19 free throws and registered 23 points off turnovers. The squad tallied 22 points on the break.
The Lions return to action Thursday when they host North Greenville at 6 p.m.
