AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College men's basketball team cruised to a 109-61 victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg Tuesday evening.
The Lions are now 9-5 on the season.
Down 9-6, Calving Johnson and
Quinnton Jackson hit baskets, putting the home team up for good.
Kole Taylor buried a shot before Jackson found
Calvin Johnson for a three-ball on the break. A lay-up by Jackson at the 12:25 mark put PC up 21-11.
Leading by eight,
Jasper Clements took a pass from Jaylan Dopson and canned a shot from distance. Dopson followed it up with a basket for a 31-18 edge with 9:10 to play in the half. Dopson continued the solid play, taking a pass from Taylor before hitting a shot from downtown for a 16-point margin.
The Lions extended the lead to 17, but the visitors made it a 14-point contest. Leading 48-33, Clements tipped a miss. Then, he stole the inbounds pass before hitting a lay-up just as time expired in the half for a 52-33 lead.
The team had no trouble in the second half as the visitors dealt with foul trouble much of the way.
The Lions were led by
Calvin Johnson's 23 points and eight boards.
Jocqua Keaton,
Kole Taylor and
Khalid Johnson had 11 points apiece while Clements, Dopson and
Landen Quimbley netted 10 points each. Kelvin Jhonson added seven points while
Quinnton Jackson totaled six points and 10 assists.
Joshua Johnson and
Najai Moody totaled three points apiece and
Curtis Phillips had four points.
Clements, Clavin Johnson and Taylor led the way with three steals apiece.
For the game, PC hit 40-of-80 from the floor, including 13-of-33 from the three-point line. The squad grabbed 50 rebounds and scored 46 points in the paint. The team scored 29 points off turnovers and got 55 points off the bench.
The Lions return to action Friday when they play at the University of Ft. Lauderdale at 7 p.m.
