Lions Conclude Season At NCCAA South Regional Championships

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Paine College men's basketball team wrapped up its season recently at the NCCAA South Regional Championships.

The team bested Fort Lauderdale 87-76 before falling to Columbia International 78-68.

The Lions wrapped up the stellar season at 17-6.

In the win over Fort Lauderdale, Quinnton Jackson led the way with 22 points and three steals. Jocqua Keaton tallied 19 points and six boards while Kole Taylor added 16 points and six rebounds. Amarie Kirby added a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards while Calvin Johnson amassed 10 points and five rebounds. Kelvin Johnson had six points while Najai Moody and Curtis Phillips posted two points apiece.

For the game, PC hit 25-of-56 from the floor, including five-of-18 from the three-point line. The team buried 32-of-41 from the charity stripe. The Lions pulled down 39 rebounds. The squad scored 34 points in the paint and led by as many as 20 points in the victory.

Against CIU, Keaton posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jackson added 17 points while Taylor contributed 13 points and six boards. Kelvin Johnson added 12 points while Calvin Johnson, Moody and Kirby scored two points each.

Baskets by Taylor and Jackson extended the margin to six, 22-16, for the visitors, at the 11:38 mark. Leading 22-21, Taylor canned a three-ball. A shot from Kelvin Johnson from downtown pushed the score to 27-21 at the 7:04 mark. CIU led 33-31 at the break.

Keaton put the Lions in front with a three-ball at the start of the second period. The back-and-forth affair saw Keaton hit a pair of three-point shots to give the visitors a three-point margin on two occasions, including one to go up 47-44. However, CIU went on a 21-0 run to break open the game.

For the game, PC hit 28-of-69 from the floor, including nine-of-35 from the three-point line. The squad pulled down 30 rebounds and scored 30 points in the lane.
