JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Paine College softball team split a doubleheader at Trinity Baptist, winning 4-0 before falling 15-14 in the nightcap.
The Lady Lions are now 6-12 on the season.
PC jumped on top with two runs in the top of the first and never looked back in the opener.
Ana Cobas singled and swiped second. She scored on the
Nakeira Mallory double to right center. Two batters later,
Lena Sellam lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in Mallory for a 2-0 lead.
The Lady Lions added to the margin in the third frame. With two down, Sellam doubled to right center and scored when
Emmy Segura reached on an error. The score remained the same until the seventh. With two down, Segura tripled and scored on a base knock by
Z'Liyah Harris.
For the game, Cobas and Mallory had two hits apiece.
Kayla Carter went the distance for the win. She had a pair of strikeouts.
Game two started out strong for PC as Sellam belted a solo blast in the first inning. Cobas singled and swiped second. A wild pitch pushed her and Mallory up a base. Harris recorded a sacrifice fly, plating Cobas before Mallory crossed home on a base hit by M. Hinojosa.
Up 3-1 in the second, Cobas tripled in A. Gonzalez. An error on the play allowed Cobas to score. PC tacked on a run in the third when an error allowed
Alexis Mena to score for a 6-2 lead.
Down 7-6 in the fourth, the Lady Lions plated five runs. Hinojosa singled in two while Mena doubled in a pair of runs. Gonzalez smacked a single to right field, driving in the fifth run of the frame.
Leading 11-10 in the fifth, Harris belted a two-run shot that scored Segura.
TBC took the lead in the sixth with four runs, but the Lady Lions tied it in the seventh when Segura scored on a fielder's choice. However, the home team scored the game-winner in the bottom of the inning.
For the game, Hinojosa and Segura had three hits apiece. Honojosa, Harris and Mena had three RBI each. Segura crossed home three times while Cobas, Mallory, Harris and Mena scored twice apiece.
In the circle,
Difany De La Rosa got the start and had a strikeout. Carter worked four innings before Hinojosa finished off the contest.
The Lady Lions return to action Wednesday, March 19, when they host Savannah State for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
