COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Paine College softball team split a doubleheader at Columbia College on Saturday, winning 8-4 before falling 7-5.
The Lady Lions are now 12-18 on the season.
In the opener, PC jumped on top with a pair of runs in the first. Emma Segura recorded a sacrifice fly that plated
Ana Cobas for a 1-0 lead.
Nakeira Mallory singled in
Kayla Carter for a 2-0 advantage.
Tied at 3-3 in the eighth, PC broke open the game. Mallory scored on an error while
Allana Adams crossed home on an error.
Alexis Mena scored when
Dara Ayovi Sr., reached on an error.
Lena Sellam followed it up with a double to left field, knocking in
Marina Hinojosa Jr., and Cobas for a 7-3 margin. Segura recorded another sacrifice fly for the team's final run that drove in Cobas.
The Koalas scored a run in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough.
For the game, Adams, Mena, Segura and Sellam had two hits apiece. Segura drove in two while Cobas scored twice.
In the circle, Carter went the distance. She struck out seven and gave up four runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits for the win.
In the nightcap, PC took a 4-0 lead through five innings. In the first, Segura tripled in Sellam. An inning later, Mena drove in Adams on a base hit to center field.
Leading 2-0, Cobas doubled in
Leidy Garcia before Cobas crossed home on a groundout by Mallory.
Up 4-3 in the seventh, Segura increased the margin to a pair while scoring on a wild pitch. However, the home team plated four runs for the victory.
Cobas and Segura led the Lady Lions with two hits apiece.
Hinojosa Jr., tossed 5.2 frames while Carter worked the final inning and took the loss.
