MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Women's Basketball) –LeMoyne-Owen's Latrice Sears drilled a three pointer at the buzzer to end the game for the Paine College Lady Lions on Saturday night, 60-58.
In the first half, the Lady Lions scoring run was started by newcomer Janisha Wilkerson when she hit a jumper with 9:49 left in the first half to tie the score, 8-8. Paine would score another nine points before the Lady Magicians would answer back to tie the score at 19 with 4:20 left in the first half. The two teams would tie three more times before the half would end.
Aalyiha Wright came out and tried to get the Lady Lions started by scoring a jumper with 18:48 left in the second half, 29-27. Tenesha Wright would answer back for LeMoyne-Owen with back-to-back jumpers at 18:05 and 17:50 to make the score, 33-31. Paine's
Jemetria Fletcher tied the game up again at 16:37 when she made a jumper after her offensive rebound, 33-33. The Lady Magician's Wright knotted the score again when she went to the free throw line and made both shots with 14:43 left in the second, 37-37.
In the last six minutes of the game, the Lady Lions managed to gain a six point lead. LeMoyne-Owen chipped away at the lead to pull within one point with :08 left in the second half.
Brianna Simms led Paine in scoring with 13 points. Fletcher and Wilkerson each had 12 points.
Tannasia Rhodes was active on the boards for the Lady Lions with 10 rebounds. Rhodes was also the initiator for the team's offense with a team-high six assists. Wilkerson continued to show her defensive power with five blocks. Wright had the fastest hands of the night with three steals.
As a team, Paine finished the night with 56 rebounds, 17 assists, 10 blocks, and eight steals. The Lady Lion bench combined for 29 points. Paine was able to have a game-high 38 points in the paint. The team was 41.3 percent from field, 50 percent from the arc, and 30 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Magicians were led by Tenesha Wright with a double-double, 18 points and 14 rebounds. Montique McConnell had six assists for the night. Latrice Sears finished the night with four blocks. Wright and Darriel Johnson each had five steals.
LeMoyne-Owen finished the game with 55 rebounds, 13 assists, 20 steals, and five blocks. The Lady Magicians bench combined for 17 points. The team scored 25 points off of turnovers. LeMoyne-Owen finished the night 27.6 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from the arc, and 44.4 percent from the free throw line.
With the loss, Paine drops to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Lady Magicians move to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in conference.
The Lady Lions will return to action and end the team's road trip on Monday, Jan. 12 as they travel to face Kentucky State University at 5:30 p.m.
