FRANKFORT, Ky. (Women's basketball) – The Paine College Lady Lions gave it their all against the Kentucky State Lady Thoroughbreds on Monday night but couldn't close the deal. The Lady Lions fell to Kentucky State, 80-54.
The loss moves Paine to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. With the win, the Lady Thoroughbreds are 8-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Newcomer Janisha Wilkerson continued to shine with 14 points. She was followed by senior
Tannasia Rhodes with 12 points and a team-high four assists. Wilkerson and Delisia Sharpe each finished the game with six rebounds. Sharpe accounted for the Lady Lion's lone block on the night.
Kiandra Guilford proved to have the fastest hands of the night with four steals.
As a team, Paine finished the night with 34 rebounds, 11 steals, and eight assists. The team was 32.8 percent from the field, 16.7 percent from the arc, and 65.2 percent from the free throw line.
Kentucky State was led by Shayla Moore with 23 points. Shaquandra Wiggins was second in scoring as she earned a double-double for the game with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Sanders and Ashley Huddleston each finished with four assists. Shaia Horton accounted for two blocks for the Lady Thoroughbreds. Brieona Warner was the leader in steals for Kentucky State with five.
As a team, the Lady Thoroughbreds finished the game with 42 rebounds, 18 assists, 12 steals, four blocks. The team was 53.3 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from the arc, and 47.8 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Lions return home to the HEAL Complex on Thursday, Jan. 15 to face Lane College at 5:30 p.m.
