AUGUSTA, Ga. (Women's Basketball) – Kayla Lewis came into the game of the bench with 1:52 seconds left to score the last points of the game and seal the Paine College Lady Lions victory over Lane College, 83-64.
In the first half,
Tannasia Rhodes got Paine started with layup with 18:47 left in the first half, 2-0.
BreAsia Burns continued the scoring barrage with her layup at the 16:42 mark in the first half, 6-2. The Lady Lions grew their lead to as many as 12 points by with 5:25 left in the first half, 31-19. At the 4:58 mark of the first half, Crystal Rayford of Lane answered back with jumper to put the score at, 31-21.
Paine scored the last points of the half with :14 left when Burns found a sweet spot in the paint for two points, 35-30.
Rayford tried to start a Lady Dragon rally with a jumper with 18:48 left in the second half, 35-32. Chloe Roberts followed her lead with a layup of her own at the 18:29 mark of the second half to cut the Lady Lions lead to one point, 35-34. With 17:28 left in the second half, Rayford's number was called and she answered with a jumper to put Lane ahead by one, 36-35.
Paine's
Lashonda Canty hit back to back jumpers at the 16:55 and 16:18 marks in the second to put the Lady Lions ahead, 39-38. Roberts made her free throws count for the Lady Dragons after she was fouled by
Kiandra Guilford with 16:07 left in the second half, 40-39.
At the 15:04 mark of the second half, Paine started to find a rhythm by way of Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week,
Janisha Wilkerson when she nailed a jumper to put the Lady Lions over the Lady Dragons, 42-41. Wilkerson, Guilford and Canty would combine to score 33 of the 48 points that Paine accumulated in the second half.
Lane tried to mount a comeback but to no avail. The Lady Lions would maintain the lead the remainder of the game.
Once again, Paine was led by
Janisha Wilkerson as she recorded her first double-double of the season with 26 points and 17 boards. Senior
Tannasia Rhodes came in second with a double-double of her own, 14 points and 11 rebounds. Rhodes also led the Lady Lions in assists and steals with six. She is followed by Guilford, Canty, and
Lasharon Salahuddin with two assists.
Paine finished the night with 47 boards, 15 assists, 14 steals and seven blocks. The team was 45.2 percent from the field, 20 percent from the arc, and 82.4 percent from the free throw line.
Chloe Roberts led the Lady Dragons with 19 points. Rayford followed with 18 points but led Lane in rebounds with seven. Shadarian Beasley was second in rebounds with five. Ciera White was the assist leader with five. White and Tiffany Martin led the Lady Dragons in steals with four.
As a team, Lane finished the game with 29 rebounds, 13 assists, and 11 steals. The team was 33.9 percent from the field, 8.3 percent from the arc, and 78.1 percent from the free throw line.
With the win, the Lady Lions move to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Lady Dragon drop to 0-11 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Paine will return to action on Saturday against Stillman College in the HEAL Complex at 1:00 p.m.
