TUSKEGEE, Ala. (Women's Basketball) – The Paine College Lady Lions basketball team dropped the first game of their three game road series to Tuskegee University, 72-59.
With the loss, Paine falls to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Tuskegee moves to 1-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The leading scorer for the Lady Lions was newcomer Janisha Wilkerson with 17 points. Wilkerson also showed her athleticism as she had the lone block for Paine. Her active play allowed for
Aalyiha Wright to open up and score 16 points of her own. Wright,
Tannasia Rhodes, and
Jemetria Fletcher each finished with six rebounds.
Lashonda Canty,
Kiandra Guilford, and Wright had the fastest hands as they finished the game with two steals each.
Lasharon Salahuddin proved to be the most generous Lady Lion of the night as she came away with four assists.
As a team, Paine finished the game with 34 rebounds, nine assists, one block and 10 steals. The team was 34 percent from the field and 70.6 percent from the free throw line.
Tuskegee was led by Jacqueline Martin with 14 points. She was followed by Rachel Brownlee who contributed 13 points toward the team's victory. Chelsea Azore and Demetries McNealey both had eight rebounds. McNealey led the Lady Golden Tigers in assists with four. Brownlee and Azore each had two steals.
Tuskegee finished the night with 36 rebounds, nine assists, and seven steals. The team was 44.6 percent from the field and 60 percent from the free throw line.
Paine will continue their road trip on Saturday as the Lady Lions head to Memphis to face LeMoyne-Owen College at 5:30 p.m.
