Lady Lions Drop Game to Buccaneers, 69-62

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Women's basketball) - Coach Willie Adams and the Paine College women's basketball team headed to Charleston, S.C. to face Charleston Southern University on Monday night to continue the team's quest to find a rhythm. The Lady Lions made several strides but were not able to get the win and were defeat by the Buccaneers, 69-62.

With the loss, Paine moves to 0-3, overall, while Charleston Southern evens out at 1-1.

In the first quarter, Paine got started with an Ashley Watts jump shot with 8:48 left, 2-2. The Buccaneers began to capitalize off of the Lady Lions fouls and turnover to gain the lead by 8 points with 5:12 left in the quarter. Janisha Wilkerson made a fade away jump shot to get Paine into a scoring mode with 4:39 left, 11-5. The Lady Lions battled back to end the first quarter down by one point, 15-14.

At the start of the second quarter, Paine's Tannasia Rhodes showed her range by draining a three pointer to tie the game at 17 at the 8:56. The Buccaneers and Lady Lions traded points for most of the quarter until Alyssa Mann of CSU made a fast break layup at the 2:38 mark, 29-26. By the end of the half, Charleston Southern was able to gain a 10 point lead of Paine.

The Lady Lions battled back in the third quarter with layups from Wilkerson and Chasity Mullins to bring Paine with in six points of the Buccaneers with 8:49 left, 40-34. A badly timed foul send Monique Maximilien to the line after she made a layup at the 3:44 mark, 47-39. The third period ended with Shauntavia Dobson making a three point basket with :03 left, 52-41.

Breanna Saunders gave Charleston Southern their largest lead of the game at the 9:18 mark when she made a layup, 54-41. Watts answered back for the Lady Lions with a jumper and drew the foul with 8:11 left, 54-44. Fouls and turnovers were the dagger for Paine as they allowed Charleston Southern kept the lead to win the game.

Watts recorded her second double digit point game with 21 points and accumulated a team-high five assists. She was followed by Wilkerson with 14 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Mullins had four steals.

As a team, Paine finished the game with 39 rebounds, 11 steals, nine assists, and four blocks. The team was 37.1 percent from the field, 15.4 percent from three point range, and 82.4 percent from the free throw line.

The Buccaneers were led by Mann with 25 points and six steals. She was followed by Maximilien with 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks.

Collectively, Charleston Southern ended the night with 44 rebounds, 13 assists, 10 blocks, and nine steals. The team was 39.3 percent from the field, 27.8 percent from the arc, and 64 percent from the free throw line.

The Lady Lions next game will be at home against Shaw University on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
