AUGUSTA, Ga. (Women's basketball) – The Paine College Lady Lions basketball team hosted Shaw University in the HEAL Complex on Wednesday. Paine fought hard but was defeated by the Lady Bears, 85-79.
With the loss, the Lady Lions slip to 0-4, overall, while Shaw improves to 2-1.
Ashley Watts recorded a double-double with 21 points and 14 assists. This game was her third with a double digit point total.
Janisha Wilkerson had the second highest point total with 20.
Tannasia Rhodes hit the boards hard for the Lady Lions accumulating 11 rebounds, nine were defensive. Wilkerson,
Delisia Sharpe, and
Mikalia Wallace each recorded a block for the night. Watts and
Tierra Boykin finished the game with three steals apiece.
Collectively, Paine finished the night with 34 rebounds, 19 assists, nine steals, and three blocks. The team was 48.4 percent from the field, 15.8 percent from three point range, and 84.2 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Bears were led by Aaliyah Mercer with 16 points, six steals, and four assists. She was followed by Aliyah Cooley with 15. Eboni Ross was the leading rebounder for Shaw with 11 boards, eight were defensive. Ross also accounted for two blocks.
Shaw finished the game with 37 rebounds, 18 steals, 12 assists, and two blocks. The team was 49.1 percent from the field, 20 percent from the arc, and 77.1 percent from the free throw line.
Paine will travel to cross town rival, Augusta University, on Nov. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
