AUGUSTA, Ga. (Women's basketball) – The Paine College Lady Lions basketball faced off against Augusta University on Saturday night at Christenberry Fieldhouse and were defeated, 83-68.
With the loss, Paine slips to 0-5 for the season and the Jaguars move to 1-1.
The Lady Lions were able to hang with the Jags for much of the first and second quarter.
Janisha Wilkerson brought Paine within two points with :25 left in the half, 39-37. In the third quarter,
Ashley Watts was fouled and went to the free throw line to knot the game up at 42 at the 9:06 mark. The teams traded baskets until Augusta University pulled away in the fourth quarter to take a 17 point lead with 6:53 left.
Tannasia Rhodes scored the Lady Lions last points of the game when she drained a three pointer at the 1:23 mark in the fourth quarter, 81-68. The Jags, Camilla Gee, sealed their victory with a jumper with :51 left in the game, 83-68.
Paine was led in scoring by Wilkerson with 23 points. She was followed by Rhodes with 21 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Watts kept the table set for the Lady Lions with eight assists.
Delisia Sharpe showed her power in the paint with three blocks.
As a team, the Lady Lions finished the game with 34 rebounds, 14 assists, eight blocks, and seven steals. Paine was 39.4 percent from the field, 50 percent from the arc, and 81.8 percent from the free throw line.
Kariel Hutt was the floor leader for Augusta University with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and three steals. She was followed by Camilla Gee with 13 points. Kayla Lovett was the rebound leader for the Jags with six boards.
Collectively, Augusta University finished the night with 49 rebounds, 18 assists, seven steals, and two blocks. The team was 45.6 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from three point range, and 61.9 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Lions will travel to Brunswick, Ga. for a Thanksgiving weekend matchup against the College of Coastal Georgia on Nov. 28 at 6 p.m.
