FRANKFORT, Ky. (Women's basketball) -- The Paine College Lady Lions traveled to Frankfort, Ky. to face the Kentucky State University Thorobrettes in their first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game of the season. The Lady Lions were defeated by Kentucky State, 79-71.
With the loss, Paine drops to 1-6, overall, and 0-1 in SIAC play. The Thorobrettes move to 4-1 and 1-0 in league play.
In the first half of play, Paine was able to pace the game with great defense and careful choice of shots.
Ashley Watts was able to drain a three point basket as time expired in the first quarter, 19-14. The second half started out well with
Kiandra Guilford trying to light the Lady Lion's fire with a three pointer with 7:28 left in the third quarter. Unfortunately, Paine was not able to capitalize off of Kentucky State's mistake.
Watts and
Janisha Wilkerson led the way for Paine. Watts finished the game with 25 points, six assists, and four steals. Wilkerson ended the night with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Lion that hit the boards the hardest was
Delisia Sharpe as she recorded nine rebounds and three blocks.
As a team, Paine finished with 42 rebounds, 12 steals, 10 assists, and four blocks. The team was 39.1 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from three point range, and 60.7 percent from the free throw line.
Kentucky State was led by Logan Powell with a double-double of 26 points and 12 rebounds. She was followed by Jamesha Mosley with 20 points and Alexandria Stanford with 16 points and six assists. Aliyah Gipson recorded the Thorobrettes only block for the game.
Collectively, KSU finished the night with 45 rebounds, 18 assists, nine steals and one block. The team was 44.9 percent from the field, 9.1 percent from the arc and 59.3 percent from the stripe.
The Lady Lions continue their road trip to face Central State University on Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. in Wilberforce, Ohio.
