GREENWOOD, S.C. (Men's Basketball) – The Paine College men's basketball team traveled to play Lander University on Saturday in Greenwood, S.C. The Lions were able to overcome the onslaught of the Bearcats and swiped the victory, 98-88.
With the victory, Paine moves to 4-8, overall, and the Blue Bears drop to 9-3.
The Lions were led by
Denzel Dillingham with 25 points. Dillingham was followed by
Don Quarles with 20 points and six rebounds.
Patrick Petty was the initiator for Paine's offense with nine assists. Quarles and Yusuf Riley accounted for one block each.
Collectively, Paine finished the game with 30 rebounds, 22 assists, nine steals, and two blocks. The team was 60.3 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from the arc and 78.3 percent from the free throw line.
Travis Fredimon was the leader for Lander with 18 points. Fredimon was followed by J.R. Washington with 13 points. The Bearcat boards were manned by Sergio Smith, Matthew McClain, and Tobiasz Hose with five rebounds. The assist leaders were Washington, Smith, and Rahu Purdie with three assists each. Washington had a nose for the ball as he came up with seven steals. Washington and Scott Elder accounted for one block each.
As a team, Lander finished the night with 31 rebounds, 16 assists, 10 steals, and two blocks. The team was 50.8 percent from the field, 52.6 percent from three point range, and 66.7 percent from the stripe.
The Lions return to action against Stillman College as they host the Tigers in the HEAL Complex on Jan. 2 at 3 p.m.
