FRANKFORT, Ky. (Men's basketball) -- The Paine College men's basketball team traveled to Kentucky State University for their first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match up on Thursday night and were defeated, 94-88.
With the loss, Paine drops to 1-7, overall, and 0-1 in SIAC play. The Thorobreds improve to 2-3, overall, and open league play, 1-0.
The Lions were able to keep Kentucky State at bay through much of the game. Turnovers at crucial points and defensive breakdowns robbed Paine of the opportunity to get back in the game down the stretch.
Paine was led in scoring by Denzel Dillingham with 25 points. The Lion who truly roared in the game was Don Quarles as he recorded a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds. Not to be outdone, Arnis Libazs scored 20 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. Patrick Petty returned to the court and led the team in assists with four.
Collectively, Paine finished the night with 43 rebounds, six assists, five steals, and three blocks. The team was 42.2 percent from the field, 11.1 percent from three point range, and 78 percent from the stripe.
Kevin Shaw was the leader for the Thorobreds with 21 points. He was followed by Dorian Jordan and Julius Barton with 15 points each. Barton led the team in rebounds with seven. Jordan led the team in assists with nine. Quentin Henderson had a nose for the ball as he came up with five steals.
As a team, Kentucky State finished the game with 33 rebounds, 16 assists, and 14 steals. The team was 51.6 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the arc, and 67.6 percent from the free throw line.
The Lions continue their road trip on Saturday as they go head to head with Central State University at 3 p.m.
