ALBANY, Ga. (Baseball) – The Paine College baseball team closed their series against Albany State University on Monday afternoon. The Lions were defeated by the Golden Rams in both games of the doubleheader, 9-5 and 20-7.
With the loss, Paine moves to 19-14, overall, and 8-3 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Golden Rams improve to 9-28, on the season, and 7-2, in league play.
In game one, the Lions were able to strike first with a run in the top of the first inning.
Adam Martin doubled to drive in
Fentress Henderson, 1-0. Henderson reached first base on a fielder's choice.
The Golden Rams answered back with one run in the second inning and two run in the third and fourth inning, 5-1.
Paine rallied back in the top of the fifth inning to score four runs and tie the game. The Lions second run came when
Brad Doebler crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly, 5-2. Doebler singled to reach first base, advanced to second base on a balk, and to third base on a wild pitch. Paine's last three runs were scored when
Jahziel Morel hit a home run over the last left field wall with Henderson and
Gabriel Guzman on base, 5-5.
Albany State closed the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Juan Berger took the loss on the mound for the Lions. Berger pitched a complete six inning game for nine hits, nine runs (three earned), one walk and six strikeouts.
Eden Payano picked up the win for the Golden Rams with two innings pitched for no runs, one hit, no walks, and one strikeout.
In game two, ASU jumped out to a 10-0 lead by the bottom of the third inning.
Paine was able to score one run in the top of the fourth inning, and four in the top of the fifth inning, 10-5.
The Golden Rams stopped the Lions dead in their tracks with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, 20-5.
The Lions tried to rally and scored the final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh game, 20-7.
Quentin Alsbrook picked up the lost for Paine with six runs, two hits, and five walks.
DeMarkus Green took the win for Albany State with four innings pitched for two hits, five runs, four walks and five strikeouts.
The Lions will return to Lions Field on Wednesday, April 6th to play Augusta University at 2 p.m.
