DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Paine College men's basketball team lost to Embry-Riddle University, 99-67, at Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout Saturday afternoon.
PC falls to 0-2 while the Eagles improved to 2-0 on the young season.
The Lions took an early 5-3 lead but saw ERU respond with a run and eventually taking a 34-14 lead. Paine cut into the 20 point lead and went into the locker room down by only eleven, 42-31. PC saw Embry-Riddle pull away in the second-half on their way to the 32 point victory.
Paine got a strong effort from junior Phillip Garner (Atlanta, Ga.) who game off the bench to score 20 points, all in the second-half shooting (4-of-6) from behind that arc. Junior Johnnie Robinson III (Akron, Ohio) had 12 points and seven assist while junior Babe Murphy (Columbus, Ohio) had 10 points and two blocks. Sophomore
Deshawndric Nelms (Davenport, Fla.) had another strong game and just missed a double-double after a nine points, nine rebound and five block performance. Freshman Cameron Gaines also finished with five blocks.
The Lions shot just 36.2 (25-for-69) percent from the field and only 26.9 (7-of-26) were out-rebounded 56-30 on the boards. Paine finished with a game-high 13 blocks. Embry-Riddle shot 49.3 (37-of-75) percent for the game while connecting on a blistering 58.3 (14-of-24) percent from three-point range.
The Eagles were paced by Rudy Bibb-Boyd who led six ERU double-digit scorers with 21 points.
Paine travles up the road to Aiken, S.C. to take on the Pacers of the University of South Carolina-Aiken on Wed. Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. USC-Aiken defeated the Lions, 75-71, in Aiken, S.C. last season.
