Augusta, Ga. - The Paine College women's basketball team fell to USC-Aiken, 74-59, in their season-opener Sunday afternoon in the HEAL Complex.
The Lady Lions start their season 0-1 while USCA even their record at 2-2.
PC's only lead came on the first basket of the game and played from behind the rest of the way. The Lady Pacers led by as many as 10 points in the first period. USC-Aiken continued their strong play in the second period and went into the lockerooms with a 38-23 lead.
The Lady Lions played well in the second half as they cut a 20 point Lady Pacer lead to 10 (60-50) but it was not enough as USCA pulled away for the victory. The teams played an even second half scoring 36 points a piece.
Freshman forward Keondra Archie (Eastover, S.C.) had her coming out party finishing with a game-high 20 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks off the bench while senior transfer Ashley Washington (Austin, Texas) also came off the bench to score 10 points for PC.
Paine shot 35.9 (23-of-64) percent from the field while connecting on only 17.6 (3-of-17) percent from behind the arc. The Lady Lions forced 25 USC-Aiken turnovers but commited 24 of their own. The Lady Pacers finished 45.8 (27-of-59) percent from the field and out-rebounded PC 44-36.
UCSA had three players in double-figures led by Emily Waters who finished with a double-double, 17 points and 13 rebounds. Kyrie' Chandler also had 17 points and Shay Fluellyn ended the night with 12 points.
The Lady Lions travel to Fayetteville, N.C. to play against CIAA foe the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University (Nov. 21) at 6 p.m.
