WBB Falls To Benedict In Overtime, 82-78

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Paine College women's basketball team fell to Benedict College in overtime 82-78 on Monday evening at the HEAL Complex.

The Lady Lions fall to 8-12 overall and 5-7 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while BC improves to 15-7 overall and 12-1 in the SIAC.

After being down at the half 39-31 and by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, PC mounted comeback and climbed back into the game eventually taking the lead in the fourth quarter. Paine led 70-68 with just 16 seconds remaining but Lady Tigers guard Zairra Harris hit a jumpshot from right block to force overtime. Benedict controlled most of the overtime period before to pick up the victory.

Freshman guard Simiria Huggins had a game-high 26 points and four rebounds for the Lady Lions. Tierra Boykin had another strong performance finishing with 21 points and eight rebounds while Senior forward Janisha Wilkerson continued had another double-double after finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, and five assist. Freshman Tania Ward chipped in with 12 points. Paine was able to force 32 turnovers but were out-rebounding 65-38 on the boards.

Benedict was led by Destiny Betts who finished with a double-double 16 points and a game-high 22 rebounds and three blocks. Three other players were just shy of double-double nights as Shirvel Luke ended up with 12 points and eight rebounds, Shanaissa White had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Harris finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Simone Roberts chipped in with 22 points.

Paine College returns to action this Thursday for the PINKZONE game versus Claflin Univeristy at 5:30 p.m. in the HEAL Complex. Fans are encouraged to show your support for the fight against breast cancer by wearing PINK.
