Lady Lions Drop Hard-Fought Match On Senior Day

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College volleyball team lost a hard-fought 3-2 match to Allen Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Lions are now 2-19 on the season.

Set scores were 26-24, 20-25, 25-19, 20-25, 10-25.

Paine recorded an epic comeback in the first set for the two-point win. Down 24-19, head coach Kisha Lucette's team rattled off seven straight points for the victory. During the spurt, Makayla Evans notched a kill as did Kelsey Williams. Soleil Johnson had two kills before Makayla Evans recorded an ace for the 26-24 victory.

After dropping the second set, the Lady Lions found themselves tied at 8-8 in the third frame. Paine trailed 11-8 before embarking on a 9-1 run. During the run, Kennedy Williams had a kill and a block. Tied at 12-12, three straight errors gave the home team a 15-12 edge. Soleil Johnson had a kill. Leading 20-16, an error pushed the margin to five. Lucette's team cruised to the win, which was solidified with a service error by the visitors.

Allen was able to claim the fourth set, forcing the deciding fifth frame on Senior Day.

Akirah McCrae slammed home back-to-back kills, knotting the score at 3-3. The visitors took a 6-3 lead and Allen was up 10-7. Then, Kennedy Williams posted back-to-back kills, forcing a time-out. However, Allen finished the match on a 5-1 run.

For the match, McCrae led the way with 13 kills while Kennedy Williams totaled 11. Daija Broadnax tallied eight kills in the contest.

Kelsey Williams distributed 32 assists. At the service line, Evans had three aces while Micah Taylor chipped in two.

Defensively, Kennedy Williams and McCrae each had four block assists while Broadnax had four total blocks.

Jordan Fortson accounted for 19 digs while Soleil Johnson added 18. Evans registered 15 digs in the contest.   

The Lady Lions return to action Thursday when they host Albany State at 6 p.m.
