AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College volleyball team registered a 3-0 win over Clinton College Thursday evening.
The Lions are now 3-20 on the year while the Golden Bears fall to 4-12.
Head coach
Kisha Lucette's team was led by
Daija Broadnax's eight kills.
Najla Betts added seven while
Akirah McCrae chipped in six.
Kelsey Williams dished out 26 assists and had three aces.
Makayla Evans also garnered three aces.
Defensively,
Jordan Fortson was once again spectacular, tallying 19 digs. Evans accounted for 15 while Demi Mckeever accounted for nine.
At the net, Broadnax, McCrae and
Kelsey Williams had a solo block apiece.
McCrae got things going with back-to-back kills early on. A point from Betts made it 5-0. Clinton College battled back and held a 21-20 lead only to see Paine College rip off four of the next five points. Up 24-22, McCrae took a pass from
Kelsey Williams and slammed home the cross-court shot for the 25-22 victory.
Lucette's team was in control of the second set near the midway point. Tied at 11-11, the Lady Lions embarked on a 14-3 run to end the set for the 11-point victory. Up 16-13,
Shacari Hardy hammered home a point. Betts served up an ace for a five-point lead. Up 19-14, Broadnax registered a kill. Hardy and Broadnax posted back-to-back points before an ace from Evans pushed the score to 23-14. After a point by Hardy, an error by the visitors finished off the set.
Trailing 11-3 in the third frame, Paine College battled back, tying the score at 15-15 on an ace from
Kelsey Williams. Her next serve was also an ace, giving the home team a one-point edge. The back-and-forth affair saw the visitors take a 22-21 lead, forcing a time-out by Lucette.
After the break, Clinton College had a service error. Betts registered a kill, forcing a time-out by the visitors.
Soleil Johnson and Betts notched back-to-back kills for the 25-22 victory.
For the match, Paine College held the Golden Bears to a .051 attack percentage while hitting .129.
The Lady Lions return to action tomorrow when they take on Carolina University at 1 p.m.
