MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Paine College men's basketball team had three student-athletes in double figures but it was not enough in the 75-64 loss at Brewton Parker Thursday.
The Lions are now 1-1 on the season.
Nate Adams led the way with a game-high 19 points to go along with 13 rebounds for a double-double.
Jakobe Williams added 18 points with three blocks while
Quinnton Jackson hit for 14 points and snagged seven rebounds.
Kevin Johnson added six points while
Cooper Smith scored four points and pulled down 11 boards.
Paine College held a pair of leads early in the game. One came on a Jackson three-point bucket off a pass from Smith just 26 seconds in. Down 4-3, Adams found Johnson for a jumper, resulting in a 5-4 edge. Down 10-5, Adams hit Williams for another shot from distance, pulling the visitors within two at the 16:50 mark.
Trailing 33-16 with 6:46 to go in the half, the Lions embarked on a 13-1 run to make it a five-point contest. Down 34-20, Adams netted seven straight points. Jackson completed the spurt with a jumper at the 2:38 mark.
The Lions fell behind by 17 in the second half. However, the team continued to battle. Johnson's two charity tosses made it an eight-point game, 60-52, with 8:26 to play. However, the team could not get any closer the rest of the way.
For the game, Paine hit 20-of-57 from the floor (35.1 percent), including three-of-19 from downtown (15.8 percent). The squad hit 21-of-28 from the charity stripe (75.0 percent).
The team also had 13 offensive rebounds, helping the visitors record 22 second-chance points.
The Lions return to action Saturday when they play at Trinity Baptist at 7 p.m.
