CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three Paine College men's basketball student-athletes registered double digits in the 89-60 loss at Queens Saturday afternoon.
The Lions fall to 3-5 on the season.
Quinnton Jackson led the charge with 18 points.
Jakobe Williams added 16 points and five boards while
Nate Adams narrowly missed a double-double with 23 points and nine rebound. He also added a pair of blocks. Kevin Johnson chipped in seven points in the loss.
A steal and lay-up by Jackson gave the visitors a quick 2-0 lead. Tied at 2-2, Jackson drained a shot from distance. Leading 5-4, Williams found Adams for a lay-up at the 17:17 mark.
Kelvin Johnson gave the visitors a three-point lead, 9-6. Up by one, Adams hit a jumper for an 11-8 edge. However, the Royals went on a 9-0 run.
Down by six,
Stephon Auguste found Adams for a three-point bucket.
Queens led 34-21before
Calvin Johnson found Williams on the break. With 2:23 to go, Jackson pulled up on the break and nailed a jumper to make it 34-25.
Trailing 37-25, Paine College went on a 5-0 run to close the half. Adams hit a free throw before Williams threw down a dunk off a pass from Jackson. A three-ball by Jackson with seven seconds to go in the half made it a six-point game at the break.
Paine College cut it to four, 38-34, with 19:16 to play when
Calvin Johnson found Jackson for a three-ball, but it was as close as the Lions would get the rest of the way.
For the game, Paine College hit 24-of-64 from the floor (37.5 percent), including seven-of-22 from the three-point stripe (31.8 percent). The squad registered 24 rebounds and had 24 points in the paint.
The Lions return to action Monday when they play at Claflin at 7 p.m.
