Lions Drop Overtime Contest

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Paine College men's basketball team lost an 86-84 overtime contest at Claflin Monday evening.

The Lions fall to 3-6 on the season.

Nate Adams led the way with a 21-point, 15-rebound double-double effort. He drained six-of-11 from the floor. Quinnton Jackson and Jakobe Williams added 17 points apiece. Jackson dished out seven assists and had a pair of steals in the contest. The duo combined to hit 16-of-33 from the floor.

Cooper Smith added nine points, six boards and two blocks while Kelvin Johnson chipped in eight points before fouling out.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Adams made it 24-14 with 11:24 to go in the first half. Moments later, another pair of charity tosses from Adams extended the lead to 15, 40-25. With 2:42 to play before halftime, Jackson drilled a jumper, helping the visitors take a 47-27 lead. James Davis' lay-up with 58 ticks on the clock pushed the halftime margin to 19, 49-30.

Claflin fought back and took a 78-76 lead with 34 seconds to play in the game. However, a jumper by Williams knotted the score with 29 seconds to play in regulation. The Paine College defense stepped up, forcing a miss at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

The teams traded the first eight points of the extra period but the home squad took the lead for good with 3:10 to play. Down by two after getting a rebound, Paine College called a time-out. However, the team was unable to get a shot off in the final seconds.

The team combined to shoot 32-of-60 from the floor, including seven-of-20 from downtown. The team had eight steals and registered 32 points in the paint.

The Lions return to action tonight when they host Brewton-Parker at 7 p.m.
