Late Rally Not Enough At Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Paine College men's basketball team closed the game on a 28-3 run but it was not enough in the 93-92 loss at Shaw Saturday.

The Lions are now 5-8 on the season.

Paine College was led by Jakobe Williams' team-high 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor. Nate Adams accounted for 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double while Elija Greer had 16 points to go along with eight rebounds. Kole Taylor had 14 points while Quinnton Jackson chipped in 13 points.

Calvin Johnson added eight points and four rebounds.

In a tightly contested game, the Lions trailed 43-38 late in the first half. The squads traded points and the Lions were still down five with 58 seconds to go in the first half. A steal and lay-up by Williams pulled the visitors within three. Paine College had a chance to make it a one-point game at the break but missed an inside shot at the buzzer.

The home team managed to lead 90-64 with 5:44 to play. With 4:26 to play, Taylor took a pass from Adams and drilled a three-ball to make it a 19-point contest. Moments later, Greer nailed a three-point shot to pull within nine, 90-81.

After a bucket by the Bears made it 92-81, the Lions closed the game on an 11-1 run for the final tally.   

For the game, the Lions hit 33-of-76 from the floor, including six-of-25 from downtown. The team connected on 20-of-28 from the charity stripe. Paine College scored 50 points in the paint. The team also turnovers into 21 points.

The Lions return to action Jan. 10 at Edward Waters. The game is slated to start at 7 p.m.
