Lady Lions Fall To Johnson & Wales

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Paine College women's basketball team lost a 64-58 decision at Johnson & Wales Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Lions are now 2-12 on the season.

Head coach Kisha Lucette's team was led by Neani Stewart's 16 points. She also dished out four assists and had three steals. Adewunmi Atiba notched 12 points and seven rebounds while Kyra McCrary chipped in 11 points and four boards before fouling out.

Ashley Rubio notched six points and six rebounds.

Jada Brooks registered five steals as did Alexandria Caples.

Trailing 12-9, Stewart hit a lay-up and McCrary took a pass from Stewart for a three-ball with 2:52 to play in the first frame.

Down by seven in the second period, Rubio converted a lay-up. After a steal from Brooks, she went coast-to-coast for a bucket. Atiba netted a jumper with 1:41 to play in the half, making it a one-point game. The home squad held a 28-24 lead at the break.

Paine College fell behind by 14 in the third quarter but pulled within five on a lay-up in the fourth frame but the team could get no closer the rest of the way.

For the game, Paine College hit 23-of-66 from the floor. The team netted 11-of-16 from the charity stripe. Lucette's team pulled down 46 rebounds and had 28 points in the paint. The squad also registered 12 second-chance points and had 19 points off miscues.

The Lady Lions return to action Monday at Johnson C. Smith at 5:30 p.m.
