AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College women's basketball team posted a 67-62 victory over Voorhees Monday evening in the home finale.
The Lady Lions are now 5-16 on the season.
Head coach
Kisha Lucette's team was led by
Jada Brooks' 17 points.
Ashley Rubio netted 11 [points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Alexandria Caples and
Adewunmi Atiba had 10 points apiece. Caples dished out four assists while Atiba pulled down nine boards.
A tightly-contested game throughout, Paine College broke open the game with an offensive outburst in the final 10 minutes of play. The Lady Lions outscored the visitors 28-18 down the stretch en route to the five-point win.
Paine trailed 45-39 in the early going of the final quarter.
Kyra McCrary answered with an old-fashioned three-point play. With 8:53 to go, Brooks made a lay-up on the break, pulling the team within one at 45-44.
A jumper by Brooks gave the home team the lead momentarily. Tied at 50-50,
Neani Stewart made a lay-up. Then, with 3:31 to go, Rubio nailed a deep three-ball off a pass from Caples for a 55-50 edge.
A three-point play by Caples extended the margin to seven, 60-53. The visitors pulled within two at 64-62 with 12 seconds to go but Voorhees was forced to foul. Brooks calmly made both free throws for a 66-62 edge.
Caples stole the in-bounds pass and was fouled. She hit one free throw for the final tally.
For the game, Paine hit 25-of-64 from the floor (39.1 percent). The squad garnered 19 second-chance points and had 36 points in the paint.
The Lady Lions return to action Wednesday when they play at Allen at 6 p.m.
