AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College baseball team picked up a sweep of Voorhees Tuesday by scores of 8-3 and 5-3.
The Lions are now 4-1 on the season.
In game one, Paine jumped on top with three runs in the third and two more in the fourth. After the Tigers clawed their way back into the game with three runs in the fifth, the Lions shut the door on the designated visitors with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Raul Guerrero led the way with a three-hit performance. He scored a pair of runs.
Denny Daza and
Jhoel Melone had two hits apiece. Daza,
Kris Williams and
Joshua Cruz each drove in two. Cruz also crossed home twice.
Hunter Justice went the distance on the mound, striking out 10. He gave up three earned runs on five hits.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first of game two, the Lions plated four runs and never looked back. Voorhees scored a run in the second but Paine made it 5-2 with a run in the fourth. A run in the sixth by the visitors made it 5-3.
Alejandro Fernandez drove in three runs while Guerrero drove in one. Daza, Melone, Fernandez, Guerrero and
Rayvion Alexander all had hits in the win.
Fabio Warff tossed a complete game and registered five strikeouts.
The Lions return to action on Feb. 24 when they host Atlantis in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
