WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Paine College men's basketball team lost a hard-fought 66-64 game at Carolina University Thursday evening.
The Lions were led by
Elijah Greer's 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor. Teammate
Nate Adams notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds in 37 minutes of action.
Jakobe Williams accounted for 11 points, two blocks and two steals. Quintonn Jackson dished out seven assists, resulting in nearly half of the team's 15 assists.
For the game, Paine shot 26-of-73 from the floor (35.6 percent). The squad had 10 steals and snagged 43 rebounds.
The Lions had 38 points in the paint, forced 17 turnovers and converted the miscues into 20 points. The team's 11 offensive boards led to five second-chance points.
Trailing by 10 with 5:32 to play, Paine trimmed the deficit on a lay-up by Greer with 4:11 to go. Jackson found Greer for another basket at the 3:21 mark.
Calvin Johnson got into the act after a pass from Williams resulted in a lay-up. Adams hit Williams for a basket, making it 66-64 with 17 ticks on the clock.
The visitors forced a miss and Williams grabbed the board with 15 seconds to go. Six seconds later, he missed a shot but
Kole Taylor corralled the rebound. Adams was unable to hit a shot with three seconds to play in the two-point defeat.
The Lions return to action Saturday when they host Virginia University of Lynchburg at 4 p.m.
