MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Paine College baseball team split a pair of games Friday, falling to Florida Memorial before besting Vorhees.
The Lions fell behind 1-0 in the second inning against FMU before taking the lead with a run in the fourth and fifth stanzas. FMU knotted the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Neither team could produce the go-ahead run until the home squad scored the game-wining run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
For Paine,
Jeury Beato and
Raul Guerrero each had two hits. Beato and
Joshua Cruz each drove in a run while
Rayvion Alexander and
Denny Daza each crossed home once.
Hunter Justice took the loss. He struck out three while pitching 8.2 innings. Justice gave up three runs but only two were earned.
The Lions bested Voorhees 7-5. As the designated visitors, PC scored with a run in the top of the first. Trailing 3-1, the visitors pulled within one in the third before taking the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs.
Voorhees tied the score at 4-4 in the fifth but PC plated three runs in the sixth and never looked back.
Alexander,
Alejandro Fernandez and
Jhoel Melone had two hits apiece. Daza, Fernandez and Melone drove in two runs each. Alexander,
Ty-re Dixon and
Camillo Martinez each scored twice in the victory.
Emmanuel Martinez tossed 5.1 innings and got the win. He struck out 10.
Fabio Warff registered the save after throwing the final 1.2 frames.
The Lions return to action Saturday when they play FMU at 12:30 p.m.
