MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Paine College baseball team picked up a 9-5 victory over Wiley (TX) Wednesday evening in the Black College World Series.
The Lions improve to 15-13 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 21-21.
PC jumped on top with four runs in the fourth before adding another in the fifth and one more in the sixth for a 6-0 lead. Holding a 6-3 lead in the seventh, the Lions tacked on three runs en route to the 9-5 victory.
Hunter Justice went the distance. He struck out 12 and walked just two in the nine-inning gem.
For the game,
Jhoel Melone led the way with three hits and two runs scored.
Denny Daza accounted for two base knocks and four RBI.
Dominique Page recorded two hits, including a double, while crossing home once.
Vladimir Lemos and
Kris Williams each had a hit and drove in one apiece while
Joshua Cruz posted one RBI on a sacrifice fly. Williams scored twice while
Camillo Martinez reached home once.
Jeury Beato scored twice in the victory.
With one out in the fourth, Melone singled and moved to second on Beato's walk. A wild pitch allowed both to scoot up 90 feet. After a walk to Martinez, Melone scored on a wild pitch. Daza singled home two for a 3-0 lead. Cruz laid down a sacrifice bunt that plated Williams for the four-run edge.
The Lions made it 5-0 after Page led off the fifth with a double to right center field. After moving to third, Page scored on a wild pitch.
PC increased the margin to 6-0 when Lemos doubled in Daza in the sixth. Daza had reached earlier in the frame on a throwing error.
Up 6-3, Melone led off the seventh with a walk. Beato's base on balls put two on board. Two batters later, Williams singled in Melone. Daza followed him up with a single up the middle for a 9-3 lead.
The designated home team cut the margin to four, 9-5, in the bottom of the ninth but Justice forced a groundout to end the game.
