Paine Drops Hard Fought Contest To Albany State

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College women's basketball team lost a 66-58 decision to Albany State Thursday evening at the Heal Complex.

The Lady Lions are now 0-2 on the season.

Jala Morgan led the team with 18 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Adia Dormu totaled 14 points, a game-high 16 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Carlysha Golatt chipped in 11 markers, six rebounds, two steals and a block.

Leia Brown tallied 10 rebounds, seven points, three assists and three steals while Jayla Dendy totaled six points, seven rebounds, a block and a steal. Da'Mar Wims accounted for two points, two boards and two steals.

PC hit 15-of-66 from the floor, including five-of-23 from the three-point line. The squad canned 23-of-29 from the foul line. Head coach Kisha Lucette's team outrebounded Albany State 57-56. 

The Lady Lions had 19 points off turnovers and converted 25 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points.

Down 7-6 in the first quarter, Brown nailed a three-ball. Moments later, Morgan canned a jumper for an 11-7 edge. Trailing 15-11, Morgan hit a pair of free throws before going coast-to-coast for a lay-up, tying the contest at 15-15 to end the frame.

Albany State outscored the Lady Lions by seven in the second quarter and that proved to be the difference in the contest.

PC fell behind by 11 in the third stanza but cut the deficit to six on a lay-up by Dormu with 1:56 to go. However, the Rams made it a 48-40 game entering the fourth quarter.

The home team cut the deficit to six at the 5:05 mark before making it a 57-52 game on a pair of charity tosses from Morgan with 4:14 to go. Morgan buried a jumper, pulling the team within three, 57-54, but that was as close as PC could get the rest of the way.

The Lady Lions return to action Saturday when they host USC Beaufort at 2 p.m.
