Paine Claims Two Wins On Friday

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Paine College volleyball team swept Trinity College of Florida and posted a 3-1 victory over Agnes Scott Friday in a tri-match.

The Lady Lions are now 4-3 on the season.

Head coach Kisha Lucette's team had a trio of standouts record 10 kills apiece in the win over Trinity College of Florida. Najla Betts, Soleil Johnson and Akirah McCrae shared team-high honors. Jamaya Allen chipped in four kills while Kelsey Williams and Kennedy Williams notched three kills apiece.

Kelsey Williams dished out a match-high 24 assists in the victory. Kayal Montoya served up two aces.

Defensively, Makayla Evans had 12 digs while Kelsey Williams and Demi McKeever garnered nine digs each. Montoya chipped in eight digs.

In the first set, Betts recorded a kill to go up 21-14. However, the visitors rattled off five points to make it 21-19. Allen and McCrae hammered home kills to go up 23-20. Leading 23-21, back-to-back errors by the visitors made it 25-21 for the win.

Trailing 13-12, Kelsey Williams and McCrae had kills to go up one. Betts and Johnson tallied points for a 16-14 edge. Down 19-18, an error and a kill from Betts gave PC a 20-19 lead. Tied at 21-21, a miscue by Trinity and a kill from McCrae forced a time-out. After the break, TC committed another error for a 24-21 advantage. Two plays later, Betts ended the set with a kill.

Down 17-13, Lucette called a time-out in the third frame. The squad responded with kills from Allen and McCrae before Kennedy Williams served up an ace. With the score at 19-16, an error made it 19-17. Montoya served up an ace. McCrae and Allen posted kills before Montoya garnered another service ace. A miscue by TC pushed the score to 22-19 en route to the 25-21 victory.

Against Agnes Scott, Betts led the squad with 12 kills and five blocks while hitting .367. Johnson added eight kills and four blocks while Allen tallied seven kills.

Kelsey Williams distributed 16 assists and Evans totaled nine. Evans also registered 16 digs in the victory.

Leading 13-9 in the first set, the Lady Lions embarked on a 6-1 run to essentially put the frame away. McCrae had a kill in the run while she and Johnson combined for a block. Betts finished off the stanza with a kill.

After losing the second set, PC bounced back in the third frame. Down 12-11, Johnson had back-to-back kills and Evans accounted for a kill. Up 15-14, Lucette's squad embarked on a 5-0 run. Leading 24-20, a service error gave the home team a five-point victory.

Down 13-11 in the fourth set, an error by Agnes Scott, an ace from Kennedy Williams and a block from Betts gave the home squad a 14-13 advantage. Trailing 16-15, Allen slammed home a kill. She and Betts combined for a block. Two plays later, Allen had another kill for a 19-16 advantage. With the score at 22-21, a miscue by the visitors and a block from Betts and Johnson pushed the lead to three, 24-21. Two plays later, Betts clinched the match with a kill.  

The Lady Lions return to action tomorrow when they host Morris College at 12 p.m., and Wesleyan College at 4 p.m.
