CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Paine College men's basketball team posted an 81-76 win at Johnson & Wales Monday afternoon.
The Lions are now 11-5 on the season.
Quinnton Jackson led everyone with his 20-point performance. He also dished out seven assists, grabbed five rebounds and had three steals.
Calvin Johnson and
Amarie Kirby netted 16 points apiece. Johnson had seven boards while Kirby snagged five.
Kelvin Johnson totaled eight points and five rebounds.
Khalid Johnson and
Kole Taylor chipped in six markers each.
Curtis Phillips added five points while
Jocqua Keaton and
Najai Moody scored two points apiece.
For the game, PC hit 30-of-66 from the floor, including seven-of-22 from downtown. The squad also buried 14-of-16 from the charity stripe. The Lions scored 26 points in the paint, had 16 points off miscues and tallied 12 second chance points.
Trailing by six early on, PC battled back to take the lead on a free throw by Kirby. The back-and-forth affair was tied at 28 before Kirby sliced through the defense for a lay-up with 4:02 to go to make it 30-28.
Calvin Johnson found Kirby for a three-point bucket, pushing the advantage to five, 33-28. Tied at 33-33, Jackson converted a lay-up just before the buzzer for a two-point edge at the break.
The score was tied multiple times in the first part of the second half, but Keaton's jumper at the 13:52 mark gave PC a 49-47 edge. Jackson found Taylor for a three-point bucket before
Calvin Johnson converted a three-point play to go ahead 55-47.
The Lions continued to control the game, but the visitors could not push the lead past eight until late in the game. Up 72-66,
Kelvin Johnson made an inside shot. Kirby netted two free throws with 3:36 to play. The squad stayed in front by nearly 10 points the rest of the way. It wasn't until the final 11 seconds did J&W net consecutive points for the final mark.
The Lions return to action Thursday, Jan. 23 when they play at Clinton College at 7:30 p.m.
